Working on something as big as automated sewing means that Softwear is not the only ones trying to solve massive hurdles in the industry. In November 2018, I was the Keynote Speaker for SYLAB, an experimental lab, where the vision is to create the potential for sewing production in Denmark through optimization of processes and automation. The background for Sylab is the large outsourcing of the clothing and textile industry, which switched to low-wage countries in the 90s. Here, DK lost 20,000 jobs in the industry. And while there isn’t a scientific number for the number of jobs it created, I estimate that more than 20,000 jobs were created due to efficiency losses, process regression, lack of incentives to invest in capital equipment, population increases and consumption trends (always upward).
